Your guide to the perilous waters of the internet

1-19-08

I wrote so much about my joshua tree last month that I burned out on the journal. Today is a Saturday and I'm finally getting into the rhythm of the new quarter at work.

Coming back from that amazing trip full of freedom, music, climbing and new friends, I was not prepared for the harsh reality of going back to work. Not that I don't like my job...it's actually one of the best jobs I've ever had, it's just that the transition from dirtbag climber to respectable college professor was harder than usual because of the length of time I'd been dirtbagging it.

Still, we have some great students this quarter and they are a fun, and enthusiastic bunch of learners. My problem today is that I caught the flu from Sue. My joints ache, I have a runny nose and a deep cough. I must have woke up 10 times last night coughing despite the Nyquil. Even worse, I'm supposed to belay today at 4 PM.

I may slowly be getting better. I am at least out of bed and sitting here typing. Austin and Paul (Austin was on the jt trip and Paul is from the gym) headed down to Smith this weekend. I sort of wanted to go but the weather looked really cold, and I'd promised Sue I'd take the family skiing Monday.

I'm teaching web design to the faculty again this quarter and have just enough students to keep my dollars per hour at the higher rate. If I loose one it drops almost in half, and if I lose 4 they cancel it. If my students do fade away I can probably make up the money with freelance works as I have 3 clients right now. Freelance web design continues to be a fairly reliable way to make extra income.

The aching in my joints is receding...maybe I'll be able to make that belay session. Wonder what the parents will think of me coughing all over their kids.
